SHOWING LLAMAS
Besides walking with our llamas on trails, showing them in front of an audience is one of the enjoyable activities that we do at Hemstreet Farm. Showing can involve formal competition sanctioned by one of the national organizations (ALSA or ILR), or at local shows sponsored by 4H or County Fairs. We also take llamas to parades, craft shows, picnics and other public events.
In recent years our farm has competed at local, regional and national levels, attending about 6 shows per year. Our farm has a llama club for youth aged 8 to 18 years who begin weekly training of a llama for show ring in April, and then show that llama at two or more local shows later in the summer. The most important lesson that these youth learn through the steady improvement in the show rings is that hard work can produce satisfying results. In 2009 two of our club youths won Performance Grand Championship awards at the ALSA Eastern Regional Championship show: Rachel Donner in the junior youth division and Crystal Farish intermediate youth division. Please contact us if you would like more information about the Llama club.
We also take llamas to various community events, such as Homestead Days at the nearby Beaver Meadow Audubon Sanctuary, therapy visits to hospitals and rest homes, educational visits to schools, church pageants, and parades.
